Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected recent statements made by U.S. cabinet members challenging the Canadian government’s rationale for withdrawing from trade discussions last month. Carney, speaking in Thunder Bay, Ont., stated that U.S. cabinet members are not well-versed in Canadian politics.

Following Canada’s decision to recall its negotiating team to Ottawa on August 21, Carney and Canada’s chief trade negotiator Janice Charette have maintained that the U.S. introduced last-minute changes deemed unjust and economically unfavorable by the Canadian government. These changes were said to limit Canada’s ability to engage in trade agreements with other nations, diminish cultural protections for the French language, and harm the automotive industry in the long run.

Carney emphasized the importance of recognizing Canada’s red lines in future negotiations with the U.S., stating that the deal must be mutually beneficial and enduring. He highlighted the need for maintaining sovereignty in making trade agreements with other countries and safeguarding French and Canadian culture.

The Prime Minister also addressed the integrated auto industry, underscoring the necessity for competitive terms in sectors like automobiles, steel, and aluminum. Carney stressed that the U.S. administration must acknowledge the interconnected nature of the auto sector that spans across the border.

In response to disparaging remarks made by Trump administration officials, Carney dismissed the insults, stating that such behavior from senior U.S. officials is unbecoming of their positions.

Carney reaffirmed Canada’s readiness to return to negotiations when the U.S. acknowledges and respects Canada’s core interests. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of a durable agreement that safeguards against sudden tariff changes and benefits both countries.
