Canadian hopes were crushed at the National Bank Open on Sunday as Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., was defeated by Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the fourth round at Sobeys Stadium. Fernandez, seeded 30th, lost 6-4, 6-4 to Osaka, who is the 11th seed. Following this, Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic secured a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Alexandra Eala from the Philippines.
Fernandez struggled to hold her ground, getting broken at crucial moments in both sets. Osaka’s strong serve and consistent play proved too much for Fernandez to handle. Despite Fernandez’s upset win against fifth-seeded Mirra Andreeva, she couldn’t maintain the same level of play against Osaka.
The defeat marked Osaka’s first WTA 1000 quarterfinal appearance since last year’s NBO final in Montreal. Meanwhile, Eala’s seven-match winning streak came to an end after capturing her first WTA crown in Washington. Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff also secured victories to advance to the quarterfinals at the WTA 1000 competition.
In the men’s singles draw, Ben Shelton, the defending champion, overcame Brazilian Joao Fonseca in a fierce battle. Shelton’s powerful serves and resilience helped him secure a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory, setting up a quarterfinal clash with Jakub Mensik of Czechia. The tournament saw several upsets and dropouts, paving the way for emerging talents like Shelton and Mensik to shine on the court.
The National Bank Open continues to be a stage for intense competition and surprises as young players make their mark alongside seasoned veterans in the world of tennis.
