A recent study has highlighted the key role of a specific food category in reducing the risk of dementia. This category is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are believed to play a protective role in brain health.

Dementia is characterized by a decline in brain function over time and is more common in individuals over 65 years old. While age is a factor in developing dementia, research indicates that about 45% of cases may be preventable through lifestyle changes.

Making dietary adjustments can significantly lower the chances of developing dementia. A 2020 study in the Alzheimer’s and Dementia journal identified a crucial dietary element that can help minimize the risk of cognitive impairment.

Researchers found that following a Mediterranean-style diet can help stave off cognitive decline, with a particular emphasis on certain foods like fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, grains, oily fish, and olive oil.

The Mediterranean diet, known for its health benefits, has been linked to a reduced risk of various serious conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and depression. Over a 10-year period, more than 7,750 participants were monitored to assess the impact of this dietary approach.

Study results showed that adhering to a Mediterranean diet led to a lower risk of cognitive decline, with fish consumption specifically associated with higher cognitive function.

Experts emphasized the importance of fish in reducing the risk of cognitive impairment, highlighting it as the most critical dietary factor. Additionally, vegetables were noted as beneficial, while other foods had less significant effects.

Further research in the Frontiers in Ageing Neuroscience journal supported the role of fish in cognitive health due to its omega-3 fatty acid content essential for brain function.

Certain foods, such as fried foods, cheese, red meats, pastries, and butter, are advised to be limited to reduce the risk of dementia, according to the British Heart Foundation.

To mitigate dementia risk, the NHS recommends consulting a GP if someone displays signs of dementia.
