O2 has officially announced that millions of its customers are receiving a complimentary upgrade for faster 5G+ services in the UK. This upgrade will provide improved mobile coverage and significantly faster download speeds, offering users a 50% increase over traditional 4G networks.
Aside from speed and reliability enhancements, the upgrade is expected to prolong battery life as devices will consume less power by not needing to connect to both 4G and 5G networks simultaneously, unlike older standard 5G setups that rely on 4G support.
The rollout of this upgrade is currently underway for users with 5G+ compatible devices and SIM cards, with activation taking place in over 700 towns and cities nationwide.
Christian Hindennach, the Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Media O2, highlighted the widespread availability of the 5G+ service to millions of customers in the UK. He emphasized that unlike other networks, this upgrade is accessible to all O2 customers across various plans, delivering improved performance in busy areas and major venues, ultimately enhancing the network’s reliability.
To check local availability, users can utilize O2’s postcode checker tool. Notable devices ready for 5G+ include the iPhone 15, 16, and 17 ranges, as well as the Google Pixel 9 and 10 series.
5G+ technology represents an advanced iteration of 5G networks utilizing cutting-edge technologies like higher-frequency spectrum, enhanced antennas, and network optimization to offer faster speeds, reduced latency, and increased capacity.
