A massive sinkhole opened up in front of a luxurious coastal mansion in Malibu, reportedly owned by actor Nicolas Cage, causing the mansion’s driveway to collapse. The incident triggered a gas leak before 6 a.m. local time, leading to swift responses from authorities and utility company SoCalGas. The gas leak was eventually contained, but natural gas services in the area were temporarily shut off as a precaution against coastal erosion.
The sinkhole, measuring 7.5 to nine meters deep and 18 meters wide, extends into the roadway, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency. As a safety measure, an evacuation order was issued for 31 neighboring properties. Despite multiple requests for comment, representatives for Nicolas Cage remained silent. Property records indicate that Cage purchased the mansion in 2024 from the previous owner.
The mansion suffered damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area, caused by the remnants of Hurricane Marie transitioning into a tropical storm. Although the storm did not directly hit the coast, it generated heavy rainfall and hazardous waves along the Southern California shoreline. The City of Malibu stated that the sinkhole incident is part of a larger coastal issue affecting the region, with ongoing monitoring of erosion along various vulnerable points, including the Pacific Coast Highway.
