NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, a native of Hamilton who previously competed in junior hockey with the Ottawa 67’s, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as reported by the Ontario Hockey League.

The OHL has expressed its support for Mayich, age 21, sending thoughts and prayers his way. Mayich, a defenseman, was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.

According to his player profile, Mayich played youth hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. Reports suggest that he was admitted to the hospital while preparing for the 2026-27 season in Arizona on August 20.

The St. Louis Blues have expressed their prayers for Mayich’s recovery. When contacted, Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, confirmed that a student on the hockey team collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university stated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, released a statement expressing the organization’s support for Mayich during his medical treatment in Arizona. The Blues are offering their deepest support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates.

OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, expressing thoughts for Mayich, his parents John and Christina, and the entire Mayich family. The Ontario Hockey League and the Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly the Huskies, have shown solidarity and support for Mayich during this challenging period.
