A surge in Coronavirus infections across the country has been marked by a prevalent symptom. Two new Covid variants, known as XFG (Stratus) and NB. 1.8.1 (Nimbus), are now the dominant strains circulating in the UK.
Although these variants are believed to not pose a higher risk than previous strains, they seem to be causing a specific symptom. Many individuals infected with the latest strain have reported experiencing a “razor blade” sore throat or developing a hoarse voice.
These symptoms may be accompanied by various other signs such as coughing, nasal congestion, headache, and fatigue. Throat-related issues can be quite bothersome, but managing them effectively is crucial for a more comfortable recovery.
Dr. Alex Allen, a Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, stated, “From the current information available, there is no indication that these variants lead to more severe illness or reduce the effectiveness of existing vaccines.”
When dealing with a cough or sore throat, it may be tempting to rush to the pharmacy for cough medicine. However, relying on over-the-counter remedies may not be the most effective approach due to limited scientific evidence.
Cough medications typically work in various ways to help alleviate a cough, including using antitussives to suppress the cough reflex, antihistamines to relieve congestion, and decongestants to narrow blood vessels in the lungs and nose.
A doctor from Southampton previously advised against using OTC cough syrups and medicines, especially for children. Dr. Oliver Bevington from Royal Hampshire County Hospital cautioned that these medications, containing active ingredients like decongestants and antihistamines, could have harmful effects if consumed in excessive amounts, especially for young children.
He emphasized that there is minimal evidence supporting the effectiveness of cough medicines and highlighted the potential risks associated with their use, suggesting that natural remedies like honey, lemon, rest, fluids, and mild pain relievers like paracetamol and ibuprofen may be more suitable.
The NHS recommends soothing a sore throat by staying hydrated and consuming honey. Dr. Bevington also advises parents to opt for natural remedies and mild pain relievers for children with coughs and sore throats.
