A tragic incident unfolded at a bustling bar on St. Helena Island, South Carolina, where a mass shooting resulted in four fatalities and over 20 individuals sustaining gunshot wounds, as confirmed by authorities.
The violence erupted at Willie’s Bar and Grill during the early hours of Sunday, drawing a large crowd of people. Upon the sheriff’s deputies’ arrival, they discovered numerous individuals with gunshot injuries seeking shelter in nearby establishments.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on X, stating, “Multiple victims and witnesses fled to nearby businesses for safety from the gunfire. This is a sorrowful and challenging situation for all. We urge your understanding as we conduct our investigation. Our hearts are with the victims and their families.”
Tragically, four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, with at least 20 others sustaining injuries. Among the injured, four are in critical condition in local hospitals. The identities of the victims have not been disclosed.
Expressing her condolences, US Rep. Nancy Mace shared, “COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County. Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and all affected by this heinous act of violence.”
This incident in South Carolina follows violent events during high school homecoming celebrations in Mississippi, where two separate shootings occurred on opposite ends of the state. The shootings left at least eight people dead and numerous others injured. Downtown Leland saw six fatalities following a high school football homecoming game in the Mississippi Delta region.
Washington County Coroner La’Quesha Watkins reported four immediate deaths and two individuals passing away later in a hospital. State Sen. Derrick Simmons indicated that 20 individuals were wounded during the gathering after the game, with four in critical condition being airlifted to a larger medical facility in Jackson.
The town of Leland, with a population under 4,000, witnessed the chaotic aftermath of the shooting. Simmons described the scene as “senseless gun violence,” emphasizing the concerning prevalence of firearms.
On a separate note, Heidelberg, a small town in eastern Mississippi, faced a shooting during its homecoming weekend resulting in two fatalities on the school campus Friday night. Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White refrained from disclosing further details about the victims but mentioned an ongoing investigation with a suspect at large.
Governor Tate Reeves expressed solidarity with the affected communities, assuring that those responsible for the crimes would face justice. Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is collaborating with local and federal authorities in the inquiry.
