Toronto police reported that a man has been arrested in connection with multiple cars being set on fire at the residence of a Scarborough MP. The suspect, identified as Roshvin Crofton, 24, faces charges including arson causing property damage, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of incendiary materials, and failure to comply with a probation order. Authorities also seized a 2025 Hyundai Sonata believed to be linked to the incident and are seeking information about its whereabouts prior to the arson.
In addition to Crofton, law enforcement is actively searching for a second suspect involved in the case. The arson incident took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s home, who represents the federal constituency of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East.
According to police, an unidentified individual approached the vehicles parked in the driveway on August 27, poured an accelerant on two cars, ignited them, and fled the scene. As a result, a third vehicle suffered damage from the ensuing flames.
Zahid expressed gratitude towards Toronto police for the swift arrest and charges laid in connection with the arson. While welcoming the progress in the investigation, she mentioned that the motive behind the incident remains unknown at this stage. Zahid, a Liberal Member of Parliament since 2015, holds positions including chairing the standing committee on science and research and serving as vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association.
Several political figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, condemned the arson, labeling it as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.” The incident has sparked widespread concern and calls for justice within the political community.
