Lorenzo Musetti has had an intense week but has ultimately achieved his goal of qualifying for the ATP Finals. The 23-year-old was on track to make his debut at the season-ending tournament, but a premature exit at the Paris Masters allowed Felix Auger-Aliassime to overtake him in the Race to Turin.
Heading to the ATP 250 event in Athens, Musetti knew his fate was in his own hands. Winning the tournament would secure his spot at the ATP Finals, while anything less would give Auger-Aliassime the final qualification slot.
Despite falling to Novak Djokovic in the Athens final, Musetti secured his place at the ATP Finals after Djokovic withdrew from the tournament. Following a quick turnaround from his match in Athens, Musetti flew to Turin to face Taylor Fritz in his opening match.
Expressing his joy on social media, Musetti shared, “A dream come true.” He also posted a picture with his team en route to Italy.
Although aiming for his third career title at the Hellenic Championship, Musetti’s loss in the Athens final was a setback. However, he was seen smiling alongside Djokovic after their match, hinting that he had received positive news about the ATP Finals, which was confirmed later.
Musetti arrived in Turin at the Inalpi Arena, supporting Djokovic’s decision to delay his withdrawal announcement. Djokovic’s withdrawal led to a shuffle in the alternate list, with Casper Ruud stepping in as the second alternate after Musetti took Djokovic’s spot.
Ruud, who was on vacation, quickly flew to Turin to serve as the second alternate, joining Alexander Bublik as the first alternate. Both alternates will receive compensation, with increased fees if they are called on to play a match.
