Keir Starmer has criticized Donald Trump’s offensive remarks about London Mayor Sadiq Khan, calling them “absurd”. The US President made disparaging comments about Mr. Khan, suggesting that London’s leaders are inclined towards Sharia law, a claim that Mr. Khan vehemently denied, accusing Trump of racism and Islamophobia.
In response to the President’s attack during the UN General Assembly, Mr. Starmer, speaking to ITV London, stood up for the Mayor, referring to him as a “good man”. He highlighted the positive aspects of their recent state visit and emphasized areas of mutual agreement, while firmly rejecting the notion of Sharia law introduction and praising Mr. Khan’s efforts in reducing serious crime.
When asked about Mr. Khan’s characterization of Trump as sexist, racist, and Islamophobic, Mr. Starmer opted not to engage in a verbal dispute. He stressed the importance of collaboration between the two countries and expressed pride in London and its Mayor for their commendable work.
During his speech, Trump criticized London’s mayor, describing him as “terrible” and implying significant changes in the city. In response, Mr. Khan questioned the fixation Trump seems to have on him, given his leadership in a diverse, progressive city. Mr. Khan condemned Trump’s behavior, labeling him as racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic.
