Starting today, GP practices in England are required to adhere to new opening hours as part of the NHS England’s updated charter called “You and your general practice.” According to Dr. Tim Mercer, a medical expert on TikTok, patients will now benefit from improved access as practices are obligated to be available from 8:00am to 6:30pm, Monday to Friday. This accessibility includes in-person visits, telephone consultations, digital communication, and usage of the NHS app.
Regardless of how patients make their requests, be it through phone calls, online submissions, or in-person visits, they are required to provide relevant information for proper assessment based on their clinical needs. The practice must respond within one working day with details on the next steps, which could involve same-day or next-day appointments, advice via text message, referral to a pharmacy, or other NHS services.
NHS England emphasized that practices cannot simply ask patients to call back the following day. Patients may be offered face-to-face consultations, phone calls with GPs or other healthcare professionals like nurses or pharmacists, based on their clinical requirements. Carers can also communicate on behalf of patients with consent.
Patients can request to see a preferred healthcare provider, though there may be a wait for their availability. Continuity of care with the same healthcare professional, especially for individuals with chronic conditions, is deemed beneficial.
To assist with the transition and ensure a smooth process, the NHS provides detailed recommendations on its website. For comprehensive guidance, visit the NHS resource page.
