Prince Albert authorities reported the discovery of human remains on Thursday in the ongoing search for a missing teenager who vanished in June. The search efforts, with assistance from the city’s public works and fire departments, along with the Prince Albert Grand Council Search and Rescue team, led to the finding of the body around the 300 block of 40th Street East, as stated in a police press release.
An autopsy is set for Tuesday to confirm the identity of the individual and determine the circumstances surrounding the death. Peyton Flett’s mother, Danica Moore, disclosed to CBC News that the police informed her of their belief that the body belongs to her daughter, but she opted not to provide additional comments.
Police announced that the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service, as well as the major crimes and forensic identification units, are collaborating on an active investigation into the suspicious death, according to the release.
Earlier, authorities, along with the Prince Albert Grand Council, Shoal Lake Cree Nation, and Flett’s parents, held a news conference appealing to the public for any information that could aid in locating her. The last known sighting of Flett was on June 16 or 17 near Marquis Road and Central Avenue close to the Northern Lights Casino.
Law enforcement officers are currently at the site where the remains were found, conducting investigations in a wooded area near 40th Street. Expectations are for traffic restrictions in the area to persist, with authorities advising people to steer clear of the location. Further updates will be shared as soon as more information is available.
