Slimming World is set to bid farewell to the term ‘Syns’ as part of a revision of its vocabulary and terminology. In January 2026, individuals following Slimming World’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan will witness the introduction of a new option for healthy fats, allowing easier inclusion of foods like avocado and nut butters in their weekly diet. This change aims to emphasize the health benefits associated with these foods.
Lisa Salmon, the managing director of Slimming World, emphasized the organization’s commitment to evolving with the times while staying true to its core principles established by its founder, Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE, in 1969. The decision to move away from the term ‘Syns’ stems from a desire to ensure inclusivity and remove any potential barriers for individuals seeking support in achieving a healthy weight.
The cornerstone of Slimming World’s healthy eating plan lies in ‘Free Foods’ – low-energy-density foods that are both satisfying and low in calories. With over 350 basic Free Foods to choose from, including lean meats, fruits, vegetables, and grains, members can indulge without the need for strict portion control.
In addition to Free Foods, the plan encourages the consumption of measured portions of foods rich in essential nutrients, known as Healthy Extras, to promote a balanced diet. The introduction of ‘Slimming World Individual Picks’ (Swips) as a category for less satiating, high-energy-density foods aims to provide members with flexibility in their food choices while maintaining a focus on healthy eating habits.
The upcoming changes at Slimming World extend beyond terminology adjustments. The company plans to rebrand its physical activity and behavior change support programs, replacing ‘Body Magic’ and ‘IMAGE Therapy’ with ‘active lifestyle program’ and ‘support system,’ respectively. Moreover, a new logo will be unveiled to reflect the evolving focus on incorporating fiber, calcium-rich foods, and healthy fats into members’ diets.
Lisa Salmon underscored the organization’s commitment to promoting a guilt-free approach to food and weight management, emphasizing the importance of creating a sustainable, flexible eating plan that caters to diverse lifestyles. The modifications have been informed by scientific research and member feedback, with the goal of ensuring that the program remains relevant and effective in supporting long-term weight loss goals.
These changes, set to be implemented in December across Slimming World’s platforms, are designed to align the program with contemporary lifestyles and provide individuals of all ages with a healthy and sustainable approach to weight management.
