A young girl, Lacie John from Bridgend, went through a challenging period of persistent illnesses that her parents felt were dismissed by medical professionals before she was diagnosed with leukaemia. Lacie’s mother, Jess, a primary school teacher, expressed concerns about Lacie’s health for seven months as she struggled with various ailments including colds, sickness bugs, and extreme fatigue.

Despite multiple visits to the hospital, Lacie’s condition remained undetermined until she developed a significant lump on her neck. Following this, she was hospitalized, but the cause of her symptoms remained elusive to the doctors.

Jess recalled the ordeal, mentioning Lacie’s struggle with various illnesses and a growing lump, initially thought to be a benign issue. However, Lacie’s health deteriorated further, leading to a high fever prompting another visit to the doctor.

After continuous illness and escalating symptoms, Lacie was eventually hospitalized with an enlarged liver and spleen. Subsequent tests at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital in Cardiff revealed suspicions of leukaemia.

The family received the devastating confirmation of Lacie’s B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) diagnosis, a rare form of blood cancer predominantly affecting children under four years old. Lacie commenced chemotherapy immediately, but the initial treatment proved ineffective, necessitating a shift to a more aggressive therapy including Blinatumomab.

With the support of a successful funding application, Lacie underwent intensive treatment, enduring challenging side effects such as significant weight loss and reliance on a feeding tube. Her treatment regimen caused her to miss a year of school due to the harsh impact on her health and appearance.

Despite the hardships, Lacie’s condition has gradually improved, allowing her to return to school and transition to the maintenance phase of her treatment. Jess has found comfort in connecting with other parents facing similar challenges and advocates for increased awareness of leukaemia symptoms to prevent delayed diagnoses.

Recognizing the importance of early detection, Jess emphasizes the significance of prompt medical attention for suspected leukaemia cases. She highlights the critical role of awareness in saving lives and stresses the need for vigilance in recognizing potential symptoms of the disease.
