George Galloway was reportedly detained by Metropolitan Police terrorism officers at Gatwick Airport upon returning from Moscow, accompanied by his spouse. The couple had flown in from Abu Dhabi after their Moscow trip. While both individuals were detained under Schedule 3 of the Counter Terrorism and Border Security Act, they were not arrested and were eventually allowed to proceed with their travels.
According to a spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police, the man in his 70s and the woman in her 40s were stopped for questioning under the mentioned Act, which grants authorities the power to detain and search individuals suspected of engaging in hostile activities at UK entry points.
Following his electoral defeat in 2024, Galloway expressed intentions to run for the Scottish Parliament in Nicola Sturgeon’s constituency of Glasgow Southside. The Workers Party of Britain, led by Galloway, denounced the detention as politically motivated intimidation.
In response to the incident, Galloway’s party claimed that despite attempts to obtain information on their well-being and rights, no details on charges or alleged offenses were provided, leading them to believe the detention was politically driven. They called for the immediate release of their leaders and urged supporters to voice their concerns.
