Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson faced a shocking moment during the Mexico City Grand Prix when he had to slow down to avoid hitting two track marshals. This incident occurred on the third lap of the race at turn one, where the marshals were alerted about debris on the track.
Despite being instructed to wait for all cars to pass before entering the track, the marshals were unaware that Lawson had just come out of the pit lane after a front wing change due to damage from the opening lap. As Lawson approached the first corner, he was surprised to see the marshals running across the track, causing him to slow down abruptly to avoid a collision.
Expressing his disbelief over the radio, Lawson exclaimed his shock and relief at avoiding a potential disaster. The race engineer commended his quick reflexes in navigating the dangerous situation.
The FIA spokesperson stated that an investigation was underway to understand the sequence of events leading to the incident and the communication breakdown with the marshals on duty.
Despite retiring from the race due to damage, Lawson remained shaken by the close call, emphasizing the danger and lack of communication that led to the incident. He vowed to seek a thorough explanation with his Racing Bulls team to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The race was ultimately won by Lando Norris, who now leads the championship with McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri closely behind in fifth place.
