A respected former “superteacher” has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for sexually assaulting and raping a child.
Lee Brumby, 64, received his sentence on Friday after being found guilty of five sexual offenses against the same victim. Throughout the sentencing, Brumby remained emotionless.
The victim’s statement, read in court, revealed the lasting impact of the offenses on her daily life, causing constant fear and recurring night terrors that disrupt her sleep and leave her exhausted.
Judge Richard Conley condemned Brumby, stating that the community, including parents and students from the schools where Brumby worked as a teacher and headteacher, would be shocked by his actions.
Despite being described as a respected member of the community, Brumby was found to have committed heinous acts that were hidden from public view.
Conley criticized Brumby for his lack of remorse and cold demeanor throughout the proceedings. Brumby had been convicted in August on charges including rape, indecency, and engaging in sexual activity with a child.
Brumby’s denial forced the victim, who had disclosed the abuse to friends and a counselor, to testify in court. The abuse started when the victim was very young, around five or six years old, making her extremely vulnerable.
The offenses continued for a significant period, with Brumby’s actions causing severe psychological harm to the victim. Despite Brumby’s claims, the court found no evidence supporting his assertions regarding the victim’s mental health.
Brumby, once a highly regarded educator known for improving struggling schools, was sentenced to 16 years in prison with an additional year on extended license. He will not be eligible for parole until nearly 11 years into his sentence.
Brumby’s actions have left a trail of devastation, with Judge Conley describing him as a selfish individual driven by his own desires at the expense of his victim’s well-being.
