Many Britons may be misusing their vitamin D supplements, potentially diminishing their effectiveness, a pharmacist has cautioned. With guidance from health professionals like the late Michael Mosley, people across the UK have been increasingly taking vitamin D tablets.
During autumn and winter, when sunlight is limited and individuals tend to stay indoors or bundle up against the cold, the body’s natural production of vitamin D from sunlight exposure decreases significantly.
Vitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining strong bones, supporting the immune system, enhancing muscle function, improving mood, reducing inflammation, and safeguarding heart health. However, improper consumption of these supplements can waste time and money while jeopardizing one’s health.
Jana Abelovska, Superintendent Pharmacist at Click Pharmacy, highlighted the importance of consuming vitamin D supplements correctly. She emphasized that vitamin D is fat-soluble and is better absorbed when taken with foods containing healthy fats, such as nuts or yogurt.
For adults aged 19 to 70, the recommended daily intake of vitamin D is 15 mcg (600 IU). Dietary sources of vitamin D include oily fish, mushrooms, eggs, fortified foods like cereals, milk, and plant-based alternatives.
Trying to increase vitamin D levels by sun exposure without protection is not advisable, as UVB rays necessary for vitamin D synthesis are blocked by most glass. Tanning beds are also not recommended as they emit more UVA radiation, increasing the risk of skin cancer.
It is essential not to exceed the recommended vitamin D intake, as excessive levels can lead to hypercalcemia, an excess of calcium in the body, potentially causing issues with the heart, kidneys, and bones. The upper safe limit for vitamin D supplementation is considered to be 4,000 IU (100 mcg).
