Marcus Ericsson secured victory at the first-ever Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham with two key passes defining his triumph. The first pass occurred when Ericsson and teammate Will Power made contact late in the race, followed by Ericsson overtaking Romain Grosjean with four laps remaining to clinch his fifth IndyCar career win.
Ericsson attributed the victory to the team’s exceptional pace and strategic gameplay, emphasizing their ability to perform when needed. Grosjean finished second, achieving his first top-five finish of the season, while Power took third place and current driver rankings leader Alex Palou settled for fourth.
The Andretti Global team, consisting of Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who holds the second spot in the driver rankings, strategically targeted Palou after Kirkwood’s crash during the race. Team principal Ron Ruzewski highlighted the importance of minimizing Palou’s points to keep Kirkwood in contention for the championship.
Despite a minor miscommunication leading to a brief clash between Power and Ericsson during the race, the team managed to maintain their positions. Palou earned 32 points, extending his lead over Kirkwood to 133 points in the standings.
Grosjean, who had been defending against Palou for a significant portion of the race, eventually succumbed to Ericsson’s pressure due to fuel and tire degradation. Ericsson described the challenge of passing Grosjean on the tight course but capitalized on his advantage to secure the lead.
Louis Foster, the fastest in practice and qualifying, started on pole but crashed early in the race, setting the tone for a challenging day with multiple cautions and several cars forced out due to collisions.
The event marked Markham’s debut as the host city for Canada’s only IndyCar race, having relocated from Toronto’s Exhibition Place after 35 years. Despite initial challenges with track completion, the drivers praised the circuit’s layout and expressed optimism for smoother operations in the future editions of the event.
