Eland Cables, a company supplying electrical cables to major infrastructure projects, has taken the initiative to implement a pay increase for its employees ahead of schedule. This move has been welcomed by the staff, who believe the extra income will be beneficial as the holiday season approaches.
The Real Living Wage, a voluntary pay standard for employees over 18 years old working for Living Wage Foundation-certified employers, is designed to cover essential living costs like food and bills. The hourly rate for the Real Living Wage will see an increase of 85p to £13.45 per hour, a 6.7% rise, and a 95p increase to £14.80 per hour in London, a 6.9% hike, surpassing the legal minimum wage requirements.
Eland Cables’ decision to introduce the enhanced wage package early sets a positive example, with over 16,000 employers committed to the Real Living Wage standard. Ben, a 34-year-old worker and father of two from Doncaster, expressed gratitude for the early wage rise, stating that it will help cover general living expenses and be particularly helpful with Christmas approaching.
JS Pelland, Eland Cables’ executive director, emphasized that the decision to implement the Real Living Wage ahead of schedule is driven by principles of fairness, loyalty, and long-term success. Pelland stressed the importance of fair compensation for employees and highlighted how treating employees well leads to increased engagement and better overall results.
With a workforce primarily comprised of essential role operatives, Eland Cables has experienced improved staff retention, reduced sickness absence, and increased productivity since adopting the Living Wage Plus policy in 2021. The company’s commitment to internal promotion and career development has also led to success stories, such as a site cleaner’s progression to a shift manager position.
Overall, Eland Cables’ approach to fair compensation and employee well-being has not only enhanced employee morale and commitment but has also translated into tangible business growth and success.
