The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is set to provide an update soon regarding its review of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) system. PIP is a benefit designed for individuals requiring additional support due to health issues, disabilities, or mental health conditions. Initially proposed modifications to the PIP scoring system, which determines eligibility, were withdrawn by the Labour party in response to opposition from MPs, disability advocacy groups, and activists.

The government is currently reassessing the PIP claiming regulations, with a final decision anticipated by autumn 2026. Sir Stephen Timms, the Minister for Social Security and Disability, is leading this assessment, which will encompass a comprehensive evaluation of the PIP process.

Most PIP applicants are required to undergo a health assessment via phone, video call, or in-person before their eligibility is determined. Sir Stephen Timms recently provided an update on the Timms Review following a parliamentary inquiry.

Conservative MP for Bromsgrove, Bradley Thomas, inquired about the timetable for reviewing the PIP assessment procedure and whether disabled individuals, caregivers, and the general public would be consulted. In response, Sir Stephen Timms affirmed that the Timms Review aims to integrate the lived experiences of disabled persons, their representatives, medical professionals, caregivers, experts, MPs, and others.

The review’s leadership team will predominantly consist of disabled individuals and collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure diverse perspectives are considered. Sir Stephen Timms engaged with disabled individuals, disability organizations, welfare charities, and experts over the summer to gather input on the co-production strategy for the Timms Review, with updates expected shortly.

The review is scheduled to conclude by autumn 2026, culminating in a report to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions for potential decision-making. These decisions could involve adjustments to legislation, both primary and secondary, alongside non-legislative measures.
