Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a former WWE star, has acknowledged his reluctance to engage in therapy despite facing significant bouts of depression. The 53-year-old actor struggled with the pressures associated with starring in major Hollywood films.

Preparing for his upcoming biopic, Johnson reflected on the parallels between himself and the troubled character Mark Kerr, portrayed in the film “The Smashing Machine.” The movie recounts Kerr’s struggles with addiction and multiple overdose incidents, leading to a disrupted career path.

The film, which has garnered critical acclaim, showcases Johnson’s portrayal of Kerr’s tumultuous journey battling opioid addiction. Kerr, now 56, is focused on recovery and empowering others to confront their inner demons and overcome addiction.

Despite honoring Kerr with an induction into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2025, Johnson admitted that embodying the lead role in the biopic resurfaced old emotional wounds. He confessed to his tendency to internalize emotions, a common trait among men, acknowledging the importance of addressing mental health issues.

In a candid conversation with the Guardian, Johnson shared his realization that acting could serve a deeper, more meaningful purpose beyond entertainment. He expressed satisfaction in exploring a more profound and impactful narrative through “The Smashing Machine,” contrasting it with the commercial pressures of mainstream blockbusters.

While Johnson enjoys starring in successful films like “Jumanji” and “Moana,” he found portraying Kerr in “The Smashing Machine” to be a liberating experience, prioritizing artistic fulfillment over financial gains.

The renowned actor has been transparent about his mental health journey, discussing his struggles with depression on various platforms, including The Pivot Podcast. Johnson highlighted pivotal moments in his life, including periods of depression following his divorce in 2008 and in 2017.

Recounting a harrowing incident from his past, Johnson revealed how he prevented his mother from a suicide attempt when he was just 15. He emphasized the importance of supporting individuals in distress and promoting a message of solidarity during challenging times.
