Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are exhibiting red discoloration and dying as a result of the severe drought experienced last summer, sparking concerns about the fate of this iconic provincial tree. Professor Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has been actively engaging with woodlot owners who have reported and witnessed the detrimental effects firsthand. The once vibrant evergreen trees, often sought after for Christmas decorations, are gradually transforming into a red, desiccated state before perishing.
According to Prof. Taylor, the current scenario aligns with patterns observed following previous hot and dry summers. He emphasized that the warm and arid conditions experienced during the drought negatively impact the balsam fir’s growth capabilities. Taylor, who has been studying the influence of climate change on New Brunswick’s forests for an extended period, noted similar balsam fir mortality events following exceptionally hot and dry summers in 1986 and 2018.
The drought induces an early cessation of the photosynthesis process in the trees as a response to the unfavorable conditions, impeding their growth. This interruption hinders the production of essential energy reserves required for sustaining basic metabolic functions and defense mechanisms within the trees. Consequently, the trees become more susceptible to stressors like insects or pathogens, raising the likelihood of widespread die-off.
Moreover, balsam fir trees possess shallow root systems, complicating their ability to access sufficient water during periods of low moisture. Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner in Burtt’s Corner, noticed the initial signs of damage to balsam firs on his property in June, with the trees progressively reddening from the lower branches upwards. McKeil has already lost approximately 100 trees to the ongoing die-off and has adjusted his harvesting practices to salvage value from the remaining fir before further losses occur.
Expressing concern about the future of the balsam fir species in the face of escalating climate change impacts, McKeil believes that adaptation or extinction may be the only options, particularly in southern New Brunswick. He anticipates a northward shift in the species distribution as a consequence of changing environmental conditions.
