ITV’s Dr Sara from “This Morning” discussed the rise of new Covid variants as infection rates increase nationwide. She detailed the symptoms individuals may experience and offered advice on managing the illness if contracted. The new variants, named ‘Nimbus’ and ‘Stratus,’ have been identified.
Recent data from the UK Health Security Agency indicated a gradual increase in flu and Covid-19 cases, with a notable spike in rhinovirus infections. The dominant lineage among sequenced samples is XFG, which includes two variants, XFG and XFG.3. However, health authorities have reassured that the rise in cases does not currently pose a significant alarm.
Dr Alex Allen, a consultant epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), stated that virus mutations are a natural occurrence over time. The World Health Organization labeled XFG as a “variant under monitoring,” with a minimal global health threat level.
Dr Sara, on “This Morning,” highlighted the escalating cases of Covid with the new variants Nimbus and Stratus. She emphasized that although cases are increasing rapidly in the UK, the symptoms are generally mild and align with other respiratory illnesses.
The Stratus variant accounts for approximately 63% of cases, while Nimbus represents 25%. Dr Sara explained that variants occur when a virus spreads from person to person and undergoes slight changes with each transmission.
The latest variant presents some distinct symptoms such as a hoarse voice and a sore throat resembling a “razor blade.” Viewers were advised that alongside these symptoms, individuals may also experience typical Covid signs like headaches, coughing, runny nose, and blocked nose.
Hospital admissions for Covid have risen, with a weekly rate of 2.73 per 100,000 compared to 2.00 per 100,000 in the previous week. Rhinovirus positivity has also increased to 14.8% from 10.9% the week before.
Dr Jamie Lopez Bernal, a consultant epidemiologist at UKHSA, urged eligible individuals to get vaccinated against flu, Covid-19, and RSV. Vaccination offers the best defense against these viruses, especially as they become more prevalent in the winter months.
He advised those experiencing flu or Covid symptoms to limit contact with others and wear face coverings when leaving the house. Regular handwashing and proper disposal of tissues can help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses.
