A medical professional is advising individuals against dismissing loud snoring and daytime drowsiness. Dr. Leen Tannous, a general practitioner working in both NHS and private settings, emphasized the importance of recognizing potential health issues associated with snoring. Dr. Tannous, who can be found on Instagram as @doctor.leen and operates as a London-based physician, highlighted the risk of sleep apnoea, a condition characterized by interrupted breathing during sleep that strains the heart.

According to Dr. Tannous, snoring should not be underestimated, especially when accompanied by excessive sleepiness during the day, as these could indicate underlying sleep apnoea. She pointed out common mistakes made by individuals who snore, such as consuming alcohol before bedtime, which can exacerbate snoring by relaxing throat muscles and obstructing the airway. Additionally, ignoring persistent snoring and drowsiness may lead to serious health consequences, including an increased risk of road accidents due to drowsy driving.

The doctor also cautioned against using sedatives to aid sleep, as these medications can worsen snoring and sleep apnoea by overly relaxing throat muscles. Dr. Tannous recommended lifestyle changes like weight management, regular physical activity, and a balanced diet to reduce snoring and enhance overall sleep quality.

The NHS highlights the significance of addressing sleep apnoea, a condition where breathing pauses during sleep, particularly obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), which necessitates treatment to prevent complications.

Various health organizations, such as the American Heart Association and British Heart Foundation, have underscored the link between sleep apnoea and cardiovascular issues, including high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. While treating sleep apnoea may help alleviate some heart-related symptoms, it may not eliminate the risk entirely. Individuals with concerns about their heart health are advised to consult their healthcare provider.
