A 22-year-old dolphin met a tragic end in a concrete tank at a seaquarium amid allegations of inadequate care by animal rights groups. Bimini, a bottlenosed dolphin, passed away on September 16 at Miami Seaquarium due to a chronic health condition that made her vulnerable to respiratory issues. The Dolphin Company, operating the Seaquarium, disclosed that Bimini had a significant tracheal stenosis leading to her respiratory challenges. Despite inconclusive lab results and the administration of first aid on September 15, Bimini sadly succumbed the next morning.

The marine attraction expressed that Bimini had left a lasting impact on guests and staff with her resilience. Bimini had faced various health concerns during her time at the Seaquarium, including bilateral rib fractures from interactions with other dolphins in a confined, unclean pool, as highlighted in a USDA report. The report emphasized the negative effects of housing incompatible marine animals together and the importance of ensuring their well-being and safety.

In addition, previous issues with Bimini’s care were underscored in the USDA report from last year, pointing out the failure to provide adequate veterinary attention. Recent signs of distress in Bimini, such as loss of appetite and discomfort, were noted by animal rights group PETA. PETA’s President emphasized Bimini’s constrained life at the Seaquarium and advocated for the remaining animals to be relocated to reputable sanctuaries promptly.

Miami-Dade County’s efforts to terminate the Seaquarium’s lease due to rent arrears faced legal obstacles, with ongoing concerns about the park’s animal care and maintenance. The USDA also raised red flags regarding essential diagnostic tools and emergency equipment deficiencies at the facility. The unfortunate case of “Sushi,” a sea lion that suffered due to delayed medical treatment, further highlighted the issues at the Seaquarium.

Notably, the USDA had issued a warning to address animal welfare issues, prompting Miami Seaquarium to collaborate with authorities to address the concerns raised. The Seaquarium asserted compliance with federal regulations and reiterated its commitment to uphold animal welfare standards. Further inquiries have been made to Miami Seaquarium for additional comments.
