Statistics from Cancer Research UK reveal that approximately 44,100 individuals are diagnosed with bowel cancer annually in the UK, resulting in around 16,800 deaths each year, making it the second most fatal cancer in the region.

Recent studies have shown an increasing prevalence of bowel cancer in individuals under 50 years old. Dr. Rajan emphasized the importance of recognizing these signs as they could be life-saving. The common symptoms include:

– Persistent abdominal pain that persists
– Unintended weight loss
– Unexplained fatigue
– Rectal bleeding
– Persistent changes in bowel habits over weeks

Dr. Rajan stressed the significance of seeking medical attention upon experiencing any of these symptoms. He also advised on preventive measures to reduce the risk of bowel cancer, such as monitoring stool consistency regularly to establish a normal baseline.
