An HGV driver, Neil Platt, faced a court trial for causing a fatal motorway crash that led to the death of Danny Aitchison, a father of two. The court heard that Platt was significantly distracted by explicit content on his phone just before the tragic incident near junction four of the M58 in Skelmersdale, Lancashire. While viewing photos of naked women on social media, Platt failed to notice the stationary traffic ahead, resulting in a collision with Aitchison’s Hyundai Kona.

Platt, who pleaded guilty to the charges, was sentenced to 10 years in jail by Judge Ian Unsworth KC. The judge criticized Platt for his reckless and selfish behavior, emphasizing that Platt was continuously engaged with his phone, including platforms like X, TikTok, and YouTube, during his journey from Scotland to the M58, covering over 100 miles.

During the trial, it was highlighted that Platt’s actions were a clear disregard for road safety, as he neglected the laws of the road by focusing on social media content instead of the traffic conditions. The court noted that Platt’s negligence led to the tragic chain of events that culminated in the fatal collision.

Platt, a veteran HGV driver, expressed genuine remorse through his defense lawyer, acknowledging the devastating consequences of his distracted driving. Despite being a family-oriented individual, Platt’s actions on that fateful day had profound and irreversible repercussions, affecting not only the victim’s family but also his own.

The victim’s family members shared their heartbreak and devastation in court, describing Danny Aitchison as a beloved figure who played a central role in their lives. They expressed their profound loss and grief over the tragic incident, highlighting the impact it had on their family dynamics and emotional well-being.

The court’s decision to convict Platt for his role in the fatal crash serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of distracted driving and the catastrophic outcomes it can lead to on the roads. The sentencing reflects the severity of the offense committed by Platt, as his actions resulted in the untimely loss of a cherished family member and left a lasting scar on all those affected by the tragedy.
