Britain’s court system is facing significant challenges, as a troubling report reveals issues such as mold, decaying seagulls, and cells inundated with waste. The Law Society’s findings show that 63% of solicitors have experienced case delays in the past year due to court conditions, leaving clients and victims in limbo and jeopardizing their access to justice. Problems like dead seagulls causing court closures, deteriorating infrastructure, and inadequate technology have been reported, with 20% of respondents flagging technology issues.

Accessibility challenges were highlighted, particularly for solicitors with disabilities, as 45% found court facilities unfit for purpose due to limited access features. Law Society president Richard Atkinson stressed the urgent need for investment in court infrastructure to address the backlog of cases and ensure efficient access to justice. The Ministry of Justice acknowledged the inherited crisis in the justice system but emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance court safety, security, and technological capabilities.

It is noted that interference with seagulls and their nests is prohibited by law between March and September. Efforts to improve court facilities have been boosted with increased capital funding and maintenance visits to enhance the overall usability of court buildings.
