Residents in Regina have been encountering coyotes not only at the movie theater but also in local parks. Scott Paton, a park regular, came across a coyote in mid-August while walking his dogs at Les Sherman Park. Paton described the coyote as curious, approaching within about 10 feet without showing aggression. He continued his walk, alerting other park-goers about the coyote’s presence, with one woman mentioning she had seen it around the playground area for weeks.
Although Paton has not seen the coyote since, he has noticed its droppings in the vicinity. Despite this, he remains unconcerned, stating that coyotes are common in urban areas and will eventually move on as it is part of their habitat now. However, not all residents in the Cathedral neighborhood share the same comfort level with coyotes.
Numerous reports have surfaced on social media about coyote sightings near Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park since August. Many posts detail encounters where the coyote approached or followed people and their pets, with one person recounting being chased and circled by a coyote in Les Sherman Park. Observers noted that the coyote appeared unfazed by attempts to scare it off with loud noises or gestures.
City Councillor David Froh had a firsthand experience with a coyote during a morning run at Les Sherman Park, where he observed the animal’s comfort around humans and their pets. Responding to public concerns, the City of Regina disclosed that they had received reports of two coyotes in the area and are collaborating with provincial conservation officers to safely relocate the animals.
Froh emphasized that while coyote sightings can be disconcerting, they are not uncommon in Regina, as humans and wildlife coexist in the city. He stressed the importance of pet and wildlife safety and encouraged residents to report sightings of potentially dangerous wild animals to the city authorities. Moreover, a movie titled “Coyote vs. Acme,” featuring Will Forte, is currently showing in various theaters in Regina.
