The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously hidden sections from a pivotal September 1986 report commissioned for a federal inquiry on war crimes. Today, Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill publicly announced a ruling instructing the government to reveal previously censored parts of the report concerning the relocation of suspected Nazi war criminals in Canada post-World War II. B’nai Brith Canada has persistently advocated for broader access to the study conducted by researcher Alti Rodal.
In response to an information request from B’nai Brith, Library and Archives Canada unveiled additional segments of the report in February 2024. However, certain sections, including those detailing the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding Nazi collaborators’ settlement in Canada, were still withheld by Library and Archives.
Judge Fothergill dismissed the government’s argument that the release of specific details would negatively impact Canada’s international relations.
