Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson appeared calm and relaxed during an interview with CBC News at Toronto’s Revue Cinema, just four days before his wedding and eight days prior to commencing filming for his upcoming movie. The film, titled “Tony,” delves into the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite Bourdain’s posthumous fame following his tragic death in 2018, Johnson expressed ease in portraying his story, noting his initial lack of attachment to Bourdain’s persona.
Johnson revealed that he had not planned to create a film about Bourdain initially. However, after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who portrays Bourdain in the movie, Johnson was inspired to explore themes of role models and the challenges of adulthood, leading to a collaboration between the two on the project.
The script for “Tony” draws from Bourdain’s early years as depicted in his book “Kitchen Confidential,” focusing on one summer in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where Bourdain began his career as a chef. By concentrating on the young Bourdain, Johnson aimed to alleviate the pressure of representing the matured and revered figure Bourdain had become in the eyes of many fans. The narrative touches on Bourdain’s formative experiences, including his relationships and self-perception as he entered adulthood.
“Tony” is set to premiere in theaters across Canada on August 14, offering a unique perspective on Anthony Bourdain’s life and legacy through the lens of his youth.
