Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, currently at the bottom of the league standings, caused an upset by defeating the Ottawa Rapid, who hold the top spot, with a score of 4-3 in a Northern Super League match held at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
The hosts took the lead with Kahli Johnson’s goal in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 shortly after. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young scored in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 just before the end of the first half.
Thurton secured her second goal just before halftime, propelling the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, bringing their current record to two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris managed to score on a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, seeing their 10-match unbeaten streak come to an end.
Despite the Rapid having 54% possession, they were outshot by the Wild 16-13 (with 9 shots on target compared to Ottawa’s 6). The Wild took six corners compared to Ottawa’s one, with the Rapid receiving one yellow card and one red card.
In a separate match, Jessica De Filippo equalized in the 57th minute and then scored a late winner five minutes into stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had put the fourth-place Tides ahead with a goal in the 19th minute. Vancouver Rise dominated possession with 56%, outshooting the Tides 18-13, with 6 shots on target compared to Halifax’s 4.
The Tides took four out of the six corners in the game, and the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued during the match.
