An NHS general practitioner has shared her annual strategy to combat winter illnesses. This follows a warning from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) about the increase in cases of the winter vomiting virus, also known as norovirus.

The highly contagious norovirus has been spreading rapidly nationwide, causing severe stomach issues such as intense vomiting and diarrhea. The UKHSA advises individuals with the virus to remain at home until at least 48 hours after symptoms have ceased.

Former NHS GP Rupa Parmar detailed her approach to bolstering immunity against viruses. She emphasized the importance of maintaining a balanced diet by incorporating a variety of colorful, nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and proteins to ensure the body receives essential vitamins and antioxidants necessary to combat infections.

Dr. Parmar highlighted her preference for dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale, along with increasing her intake of vitamin C through supplements to enhance immune function.

Recent research from 2021 indicated that consuming nutrient-dense foods can help support overall health and normal bodily functions. While practicing proper hygiene and social distancing remain crucial in preventing virus transmission, enhancing immunity through a well-rounded diet can offer significant protection against viral infections.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are approximately 685 million reported cases of norovirus annually, with a significant portion affecting children under the age of five. The virus is accountable for an estimated 200,000 deaths each year, including 50,000 fatalities among children.

Common symptoms of norovirus include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, headaches, and abdominal or body pains. Individuals infected with the virus are advised to avoid hospitals, care homes, and other public places to prevent further spread.

Health experts recommend refraining from attending school, work, or other public settings until at least two days have passed without experiencing symptoms. If norovirus is contracted, the NHS suggests several steps to alleviate symptoms and expedite recovery.
