The Toronto Blue Jays are set to honor Buck Martinez, a veteran broadcaster, by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after calling over 4,000 games, had a distinguished career spanning almost four decades with the organization, serving as a player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his gratitude, Martinez shared his surprise at the honor during an interview on CBC Radio’s “Metro Morning.” He acknowledged the Jays fans for their warm reception over the years, making him feel like a part of their families. Known for his distinctive broadcasting style and iconic phrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez credited his time in Milwaukee and his experience as a player for shaping his on-air persona.

Despite his initial skepticism upon joining the Blue Jays in 1981, Martinez acknowledged the team and the country’s enthusiasm for baseball, which transformed his perception of Toronto from feeling “exiled” to embracing it as a special place to play. Reflecting on memorable moments, Martinez highlighted the excitement of last year’s World Series, particularly Game 7, emphasizing the team’s chemistry.

Having battled cancer twice, Martinez had to step back from broadcasting but is now cancer-free and enjoying good health. The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will showcase exhibits honoring key figures who contributed to the franchise’s legacy. Notably, Martinez will join other esteemed individuals like Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay on the team’s Level of Excellence.

Looking ahead, Martinez shared his surprise at Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s challenges during a tough season for the Blue Jays, emphasizing the relentless nature of the game even for top players. Despite the ups and downs, Martinez’s impact on the Blue Jays’ history and his enduring connection with the team and its fans remain a significant part of his legacy.
