The Birmingham Christmas Markets are well-known for their popularity, often showcased on social platforms. Opting for Birmingham as a meetup location with a friend from Cardiff, central for both of us, was a logical choice given the notorious busyness and rain in Manchester. However, Birmingham proved even busier and rainier, surprising me.
The train journey was a precursor to the crowded experience ahead, with passengers almost on top of each other in the aisles. Despite the constant rain hindering our market exploration, the city was bustling, rivaling even London in its busyness.
Navigating through the throngs of people around stalls and the Bull Ring shopping center proved challenging. Expectations of a relaxed market vibe, as seen on TikTok, were quickly shattered by the reality of the overcrowded and rain-soaked scene.
The festive atmosphere and beautiful stalls contrasted with the struggle to find respite from the rain in packed undercover bars. Trying a Bratwurst for the first time was a letdown, leading to a fruitless search for a less crowded lunch spot, with even popular places like Bill’s sporting long queues.
The day’s relentless rain left me feeling like a drowned rat, with my hair a frizzy mess. Walking through puddles caused my Uggs’ dye to leak onto my socks, adding to the unpleasant experience of what seemed like the worst weekend weather-wise.
Despite the uncontrollable weather, the overwhelming busyness of the city was a major concern. Commuting challenges for my friend, with a canceled train from Cardiff forcing a lengthy drive, added to the day’s frustrations.
Although my train’s tardiness was typical, the delay paled in comparison to my friend’s traffic ordeal, stuck in Birmingham city center for over an hour. The day’s chaos was somewhat mitigated by the enjoyable company of my uni friend and the much-needed hot shower upon returning home to combat the cold and dampness.
Future visits to Birmingham may require careful consideration of the timing to avoid the Christmas market frenzy.
