EE mobile users are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender have observed a rise in urgent messages sent to EE customers, threatening the loss of significant EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.
The scam involves cybercriminals posing as the reputable EE network to entice users into clicking on malicious links that redirect them to counterfeit websites. These fraudulent sites are designed to capture login credentials, enabling the scammers to profit illicitly.
The success of this scam hinges on creating a sense of urgency, coercing users into quick responses without much thought. Bitdefender explained that scammers exploit this urgency by setting tight deadlines to make users feel like they are at risk of losing something valuable.
Authentic communications from EE are exclusively delivered through official EE accounts and not via unsolicited texts. Any message pressuring users with countdowns or demanding swift action should raise suspicion. Users are advised to forward suspicious texts to 7726 and promptly delete them.
This type of scam has previously targeted EE customers, with reports dating back to earlier this year when users received convincing fake messages related to reward points. Users have shared their experiences, cautioning others to be vigilant and refrain from interacting with such messages.
EE has clarified that it does not have a points program and has shared examples of scam messages to raise awareness among users. The company’s latest advice includes avoiding clicking on unknown links in text messages, refraining from responding to suspicious messages, avoiding calling the sender’s number, and safeguarding personal and financial information.
EE users are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to the recommended precautions to protect themselves from falling victim to such scams.
