A seemingly harmless squirrel climbing a tree for acorns can turn into a dangerous situation, as these rodents have been reported to aggressively attack humans. In one incident, Isabel Campoy faced a life-threatening situation when a feral squirrel unexpectedly leaped onto her face, causing deep wounds on her arm. Another victim, Joan Heblack, described a scary encounter where a squirrel latched onto her leg during a morning walk, leaving her with bite and claw marks that required medical attention.
Experts have warned that squirrels can transmit diseases like leptospirosis and salmonella. In the Lucas Valley area of San Rafael, California, a total of five people, including Isabel and Joan, have fallen victim to squirrel attacks. Concerned residents have taken action by putting up warning posters to alert others about the aggressive squirrel in the area.
According to Vanessa Potter from WildCare in San Rafael, these attacks could be a result of squirrels associating humans with food, leading them to become more fearless and territorial. A similar pattern of attacks by a feral squirrel was seen in the UK a few years ago, where multiple individuals were injured by the same aggressive rodent over a short period.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to be cautious and avoid feeding wild animals to prevent such incidents from reoccurring.
