A mother speaks out about her baby born with a rare condition where part of his brain protruded through his forehead, calling him a “true miracle.” Hannah Sachs had a smooth pregnancy until a 22-week scan revealed her baby, Liam, had an encephalocele, a brain defect. Liam was born prematurely with a sac on his forehead, requiring immediate care in the NICU.
Despite initial fears, Liam had a successful birth with no complications. However, he later developed hydrocephalus, necessitating emergency surgery to place a shunt. Further, at one month old, Liam underwent brain surgery, with plans for a future surgery to address the encephalocele and skull reconstruction.
In September 2023, Liam underwent an extensive 11-hour surgery to correct his skull deformities. Post-surgery, he faced challenges such as swollen eyes and mobility issues. Despite being diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 10 months, Liam has made remarkable progress through various therapies and developmental milestones.
Hannah expressed pride in Liam’s strength and resilience, highlighting his determination to overcome obstacles. While acknowledging the difficulties and uncertainties, she emphasized Liam’s unique journey and described him as an “imperfectly perfect” miracle. She affirmed that despite the challenges, she wouldn’t change anything about Liam for the world.
