A newborn baby was unexpectedly born holding a T-shaped contraceptive device, defying the odds of its intended purpose to prevent pregnancy. The baby boy, named Matheus Gabriel, arrived in the world despite his mother, Queidy Araujo de Oliveira, using the contraceptive coil known as an IUD for two years.
The IUD, a contraceptive method involving a T-shaped device inserted into the womb, releases copper to prevent pregnancy according to the NHS, typically lasting for five to 10 years. Despite its supposed effectiveness, the mother discovered her pregnancy during a routine check-up while the IUD remained in place due to the risks involved in its removal.
During the pregnancy, Queidy experienced complications, but her baby boy was born healthy at a hospital in Brazil. Shortly after birth, a photo captured Matheus holding the IUD in his tiny hands, symbolizing his victory over the contraceptive method.
In a social media post, the caption humorously read, “Holding my victory trophy: the IUD that couldn’t handle me!” The baby’s father, planning a vasectomy, joked online about closing the “factory.”
This occurrence is not unique, as a similar incident happened previously in Vietnam, where a baby was photographed holding his mother’s IUD after birth. The obstetrician involved shared that the device had dislodged during delivery, leading to an unexpected pregnancy.
These instances highlight that contraceptive methods may not always be foolproof, underscoring the importance of understanding their limitations and effectiveness to avoid unintended pregnancies.
