An individual from Annapolis Valley has been charged with attempted murder and various weapons offenses following a shooting incident involving a woman known to the suspect. The woman sustained life-threatening injuries and was swiftly transported to the hospital.
Ryan Alexander Cole, aged 36, appeared briefly in Nova Scotia Provincial Court on Monday, with his case adjourned until August 25. He is currently in custody.
The incident unfolded on a Saturday morning in South Farmington within the Annapolis Valley region. Law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting, prompting the suspect to flee in a damaged Mazda sedan towards Halifax.
Police pursued the vehicle and deployed a spike belt on the highway in an attempt to halt the suspect. Despite evading the deflation device, the man was later located via aerial tracking after the Mazda crashed into a tree along a hiking trail behind a shopping center in Bedford, a suburb of Halifax.
The suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, prompting the RCMP to issue alerts. With public safety at risk due to the suspected possession of a firearm, an emergency alert was broadcast to all residents in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) area.
Law enforcement agencies, including police dog units and emergency response teams from the RCMP and Halifax Regional Police, collaborated to apprehend the suspect. While acknowledging a connection between Cole and the victim, the precise nature of their relationship remains unconfirmed.
Cole has an extensive criminal history dating back to 2008, marked by multiple breaches of release conditions, as well as charges such as disarming a police officer, resisting arrest, and unauthorized sharing of intimate images.
