A device similar to Sky Q but without monthly fees has gained popularity at Argos. The Manhattan S4-R set-top box, launched recently, offers features like recording programs, pausing live TV, and storing content on its in-built hard drive, akin to Sky’s premium service.
The standout feature of the Manhattan S4-R is its cost structure. Unlike Sky Q, which demands a monthly payment, the Manhattan S4-R provides access to over 100 channels without any ongoing fees. Once purchased, there are no additional charges.
Operated through Freesat, the S4-R utilizes an existing satellite dish to deliver free TV channels directly to your TV. Channels available include BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, and more. The device boasts a user-friendly interface, built-in search capabilities, and over 60,000 hours of on-demand content, supporting apps like BBC iPlayer and My5.
Although it may not offer premium sports and movie packages like Sky Q, Freesat’s advantage lies in its cost-free viewing experience. The Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is currently retailing at £219.99 at stores like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions expected to launch soon. The device is in high demand, according to Argos.
Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, underlined the S4-R’s enhancement in recording capabilities, allowing up to four simultaneous recordings compared to the previous two-channel limit. He positioned the S4-R as an attractive alternative for households seeking a more economical and flexible TV service.
Challenging conventional TV providers, the Pleio puck has entered the market, offering Freely streaming access to TVs without requiring an aerial. Priced at £99.99, the Pleio puck includes a gaming controller and access to over 200 online games.
Sky has announced a 20% price reduction on its Sky Glass Air TV ahead of the World Cup, with prices starting from £4.50 per month. Customers opting for the upgraded Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, will need to pay from £11 per month.
