Former Labour Cabinet minister Alan Johnson has advised Andy Burnham to publicly reject any intention of challenging Keir Starmer for the party leadership. Johnson expressed that Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, would not be benefiting the country by running for leadership despite claims that MPs have encouraged him to do so. Johnson emphasized the importance of supporting the elected leader and suggested Burnham follow his lead by making a clear statement in front of a television camera.
Johnson praised Burnham as a skilled politician who has excelled in his role in Manchester but cautioned that pursuing the leadership bid would not serve him, the Labour Party, or the country well. Burnham, known as the “King of the North,” has been advocating for significant changes in the country’s direction, sparking concerns in Downing Street with his recent activities.
Although Burnham admitted to receiving encouragement to run for leadership, he stated that the decision ultimately lies with those who approached him. Meanwhile, Keir Starmer has called for patience from his critics as he aims to deliver on the promises made during the previous general election. Starmer outlined key criteria by which he expects to be evaluated, including improvements in living standards, public services, and national security.
Starmer emphasized the need for space and time to fulfill his objectives over his five-year mandate, ensuring the country’s safety and stability in a rapidly changing global landscape.
