A man who was facing trial for the alleged murder of a mother and her three young children in a house fire has been discovered deceased in his prison cell. Mohammed Shabir, aged 45, was implicated in the deaths of Bryonie Gawith, 29, and her children: Denisty Birtle, nine, Oscar Birtle, five, and Aubree Birtle, aged 22 months. The tragic incident occurred when a fire ravaged their residence in Bradford on August 21 the previous year. Shabir, along with two other individuals, Sharaz Ali, 40, and Calum Sunderland, 26, were accused of the murders and the attempted murder of Bryonie’s sister and Ali’s ex-partner, Antonia Gawith. Residents in the area recounted hearing screams and observing smoke emanating from the burning house in the early hours of the morning. The suspects were subsequently apprehended and charged with murder.

The recent development confirms the passing of Shabir at HMP Leeds. The Prison Service has announced an inquiry into his demise, stating, “Mohammed Shabir passed away on September 24, 2025, at HMP Leeds. As is standard practice for all in-custody deaths, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation.” Following the news, a family member of the children’s father expressed disappointment that Shabir would not face the consequences he deserved.

In the aftermath of the tragic event, Bryonie’s grief-stricken mother was seen tearfully reading tributes left at her daughter’s residence, surrounded by supportive relatives and friends. Heartfelt messages and tokens of remembrance, including flowers and teddy bears, were placed in memory of the deceased family. One note conveyed well wishes to Bryonie, Denisty, Oscar, and Aubree, while another message from Denisty’s teacher honored the children’s memory, highlighting their unique qualities and expressing deep sorrow over their untimely passing. In a poignant statement, Bryonie’s family described her as a joyful and caring individual who cherished her children above all else, emphasizing the profound loss they now endure. Their thoughts and sympathy also extended to the children’s father during this challenging period.
