World Afro Day, observed on September 15, is now linked with the ‘Fix the Law, Not Afro Hair’ campaign. Originating in 2017 as a UK-focused initiative by Michelle De Leon, World Afro Day has evolved into a global movement. The recent event in Parliament aimed to celebrate Afro hair and advocate for enduring change, including a Guinness World Record endeavor.

The Fix The Law, Not Our Hair campaign was initiated in 2024 to urge policymakers to address legal gaps enabling hair discrimination. Among the supporters was Mel B from the Spice Girls, joining thousands of Britons in demanding change.

At a special event attended by The Mirror, participants gathered at the House of Commons for panel discussions and heartfelt moments. Hosted by Liam Conlon, the Labour MP for Beckenham and Penge, the event emphasized the importance of embracing Afro hair.

Michelle De Leon expressed optimism about the Guinness World Record attempt uniting people globally to promote awareness about Afro hair. She highlighted the significance of acknowledging and appreciating one’s hair as an integral part of identity.

World Afro Day ambassador Ruby Williams shared her experience of facing discrimination due to her hair during her school years. Rapper Krept emphasized the need to normalize and take pride in Afro hair to eliminate the need for explanations.

TV presenter and DJ Sarah-Jane Crawford reflected on her past struggles with hair-related pressures and the current empowerment she feels embracing her natural hair. She emphasized the importance of World Afro Day in fostering unity and strength.

Efforts have been made post-World Afro Day’s inception to address the necessity of explicitly banning hair-based discrimination under the Equality Act of 2010. Sponsors Paulette Hamilton MP and Liam Conlon MP engaged with Equality Minister Seema Malhotra to advocate for legal changes safeguarding Afro hair.

Liam Conlon MP stressed the educational aspect in combating discrimination, aiming to promote inclusivity and diversity in workplaces. The Guinness World Record attempt invites participation from everyone interested in learning about Afro hair through videos and an interactive quiz.

To support the cause and be part of the change, individuals can participate in the Guinness World Record attempt.
