Coronation Street bosses trademark brand amid plans to flog perfumes and soaps

Must read

Soap fans could soon have their very own whiff of Weatherfield with a range of Corrie perfumes.

Coronation Street bosses have applied to trademark the ‘Corrie’ brand with the UK’s Intellectual Property Office. They want the ability to flog “Toiletries; cosmetics; soaps; perfumes; essential oils; eau de Cologne; make-up; hair lotions; shampoos; suntan lotions” using the world-famous Corrie name.

The application also extends to homewares like kitchen utensils and bed linen. It was filed last month by ITV chiefs and will stay in place for 10 years once rubber-stamped.

An intellectual property lawyer who has seen the papers told us: “The trademark enhances the TV company’s capacity to take action against unauthorised third parties that might use its name for commercial purposes.

“Simply having these trademarks registered can serve as a significant deterrent to any third party contemplating the unauthorized use of the name.

“Moreover, it enhances ITV’s prospects for commercializing the Corrie brand. Being a television company, they are likely to seek opportunities to license these trademarks to partners, generating revenue through royalties in the process.”

More than 30 years ago Corrie legend Liz Dawn – who played Vera Duckworth – reportedly released a fragrance with her endorsement on it.

And if Street bosses do start selling their branded perfume they will be following a host of famous names flogging their own scents, including David Beckham and Britney Spears.

Others to put their names to perfumes include Kerry Katona, Ariana Grande and even Donald Trump, who released a cologne called Empire.

Other items that Corrie are trademarking include lunch boxes, beer glasses, water bottle and teapots. They have also listed bean bags covers, hats, ties, rain ponchos and bathrobes.

Fans going on the Coronation Street tour can already visit the gift shop offering a range of goodies.

They say: “Now, who doesn’t love a bit of Coronation Street? Whether you’ve been a fan for years, or you’re buying a gift for a drama queen or soap king, the Coronation Street Gift Shop in our visitor centre has something for everyone.

“The Corrie shop is an absolute treasure trove! We’ve got all the goodies you need to bring a touch of Weatherfield into your own home. For those who fancy themselves as a bit of a master chef, we’ve got this fabulous Roy’s Rolls apron.

“We’ve got tote bags, towels, and mugs with famous Corrie quotes plastered all over ’em! It’s like owning a little piece of the Street.”
