Aldi has once again been named the most affordable supermarket in the UK in the latest price comparison by Which?. In September, the average cost of 71 items at Aldi totaled £122.77, making it £1.18 less expensive than Lidl, where the same items averaged £123.95.

Which? conducts monthly comparisons of popular groceries at the eight largest supermarkets, considering special promotions and loyalty discounts but excluding multi-buy offers. In the recent analysis, none of the 71 items were cheaper for Lidl Plus customers. The list included both branded and own-brand products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

Tesco claimed the third spot, with Clubcard members paying an average of £135.64, while non-members spent £138.66 on the same items. Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders spent an average of £138.74, whereas non-cardholders paid £142.70 for the items.

For a more extensive list of 186 items, Asda emerged as the most cost-effective option in September, with an average bill of £465.66. This was cheaper than Tesco’s Clubcard price, which totaled £472.45 for the same items. Waitrose, on the other hand, stood out as the priciest option, with smaller and larger shops averaging £161.19 and £531.39, respectively.

Which? Retail Editor Reena Sewraz highlighted Aldi’s consistent affordability and Asda’s competitive pricing. Sewraz advised shoppers to compare prices diligently, as switching to a cheaper supermarket could result in savings of up to 36%.
