BBC Morning Live’s resident GP, Dr. Oscar Duke, has shared an affordable kitchen essential costing just 68p that could help alleviate cold and flu symptoms at home. This advice comes amidst a rise in cases of the ‘winter vomiting bug’ across the UK, prompting health authorities to urge people to stay home.

During a recent appearance on the show in 2024, Dr. Duke discussed how common household ingredients found in your pantry could be effective in combating seasonal illnesses.

Highlighting the benefits of regular table salt, Dr. Duke explained that a simple mixture of salt and water can offer immediate relief. Table salt is readily available in most supermarkets, with Tesco selling a bottle for 68p, and options at Asda and Waitrose for under £1, making it a cost-effective remedy that may already be in your kitchen.

Dr. Duke emphasized that while there is no cure for viruses causing common colds, managing symptoms is key as the illness runs its course. He recommended using saltwater drops, stating they could potentially reduce symptom duration by approximately two days.

For preparing homemade saltwater solution, Dr. Duke advised mixing three teaspoons of salt and one teaspoon of bicarbonate in cooled boiled water. This mixture can then be diluted with water for use as a nasal spray, drops, or for inhalation to help alleviate congestion.

Referencing a recent study conducted in Edinburgh involving 400 children, Dr. Duke explained that saltwater drops have shown to shorten the duration of cold symptoms. However, it is important to note that while saltwater may provide relief from discomfort by clearing mucus, it does not eliminate the virus itself.

In addition to saltwater, Dr. Duke recommended honey as another beneficial remedy for cold symptoms, as per national guidelines. Research has shown that consuming honey at night can help alleviate symptoms and can be added to hot beverages for relief.

Furthermore, Dr. Duke mentioned the benefits of chicken soup in clearing mucus from respiratory airways, suggesting that homemade versions may be more effective than store-bought options. Consuming nourishing foods like chicken soup can help manage cold symptoms effectively.
