Terence “Bud” Crawford, the newly crowned world super middleweight boxing champion, found himself in a controversial situation when police stopped him for suspected reckless driving in Omaha, NE, during the early hours of a Saturday morning.

During the incident, Crawford and his three companions were ordered out of their vehicle at gunpoint after law enforcement officers saw a legally owned firearm on the car’s floor, belonging to one of Crawford’s associates.

The police officers immediately recognized Crawford, who was in town to celebrate his 38th birthday and recent victory over Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas.

Following the incident, a statement from the police revealed that an internal affairs investigation had been authorized by Omaha Mayor John Ewing and Police Chief Todd Schmaderer after a video circulated on social media regarding the traffic stop involving Crawford.

According to reports, the police observed the vehicle driving recklessly near North 12th and Capitol Avenue before conducting a traffic stop at Cass Street around 1:30 a.m.

Upon speaking with the driver, officers noticed the firearm on the driver’s side floorboard, prompting them to order all occupants out of the vehicle at gunpoint. Crawford, after presenting his driver’s license, was issued a citation for reckless driving. Additionally, one of Crawford’s security team members was also found to be carrying a legal firearm.

Police confirmed that all occupants had legal permits for carrying firearms, and a police supervisor and lieutenant arrived at the scene upon Crawford’s request.

Mayor Ewing acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and emphasized the importance of trust between law enforcement and the community. He expressed support for Chief Schmaderer’s pledge for a thorough internal investigation to gather all facts and ensure transparency with the public.

Qasim Shabazz, head of Crawford’s security team, recounted feeling threatened during the incident, mentioning the tense situation when the police officer reacted upon seeing the firearm.

This incident has sparked discussions regarding the handling of the situation and the need for continuous efforts to strengthen community relationships.
